Mineola High School offers a wide array of clubs that contribute culturally, artistically, and academically to the school community. The widely acclaimed non profit organization, "I Am That Girl", will now be a part of these offerings.
I Am That Girl (IATG), offers a safe place for young women to discuss everything from confidence, relationships, politics, fears, struggles, beauty, leadership, and everything in between. It is dedicated to self empowerment and the idea that women should lift each other up. The club was a student initiated idea, spearheaded by Mrs. Messina, choral director, with the help of Erin Talty, peer leader. Mrs. Messina states that the club is important because, "There is nothing currently in our school that caters specifically to young women." She goes on to say, "I think that our young women need a skill set and a set of tools to navigate all the unique things that come with being a young woman, particularly navigating social constraints and unrealistic society view of what a women should look like and act like." In addition to giving young women a safe place to express their beliefs and have a voice, the club also gives back to the community.
IATG influences a large body of women, with more than 175 local chapters, an online community of over 700,000, and an overall community of five million. Their influence reaches nearly every US state and has international chapters as well.
