International Women’s Day is a celebration of the flourishing modern feminist movement, and thousands of women throughout the US and abroad are expected to stage job strikes and restrain from commerce as a demonstration of their vital role in society. Originally called International Working Women’s Day, the observance began as a labor protest in 1909 in New York City, and his since grown into an annual, UN-recognized event. In addition to being a celebration of women’s rights, organizers have declared the day as a mission to promote overall civil awareness and anti-discrimination campaigns. International Women’s Day comes less than two months after the hugely successful Women’s March on Washington, which drew a crowd roughly three times the size of the audience that attended President Trump’s inauguration.
